Opel Corsa-e, elektrické auto s dvoma tvárami / Opel Corsa-e, EV with two faces

Stačilo by pozmeniť prednú masku...

Elektrické auto by si zaslúžilo trochu viac.

Jazda, výkon a dojazd

Corsa-e ponúka vodičovi možnosť meniť hocikedy počas jazdy režim medzi Eco/Normal a Sport.

English version

The German manufacturer Opel has included a completely electric Corsa to their offer, which you would not even distinguish from the petrol one. If I would not have the highest trim at my disposal, which includes logos ´e´ on B- posts, you wouldn't know that electric version is next to you... The tested vehicle had a beautiful orange color, which was complemented by black roof, black wheels, and black rear-view mirrors. Anyone who likes this color combination will simply smile after looking at this Corsa.

Design

The electric Corsa uses 17“discs with Michelin tires, specifically in size 205/45. The bigger 17“wheels fit this little guy exactly. The Tires by themselves can keep Corsa on the road relatively reliable, even during sharp cornering. As I mentioned in the beginning, Opel designers kept it simple and the electric Corsa is undistinguishable from the petrol one, which is kind of a pity. I would have expected at least one component to be a little different, futuristic – to add an ´e ´ logo (and even that in the highest equipment) seems inadequate.

It would be enough to change the front mask...However, if you do not mind getting any special design with your electric car, then it will not be a disadvantage for you. If we let go of that fact, then the Corsa has got a fairly decent design. The younger generation will probably like the orange – black combination better, however, you can choose from 8 different color combinations overall.

From the driver's perspective

After getting into the Corsa-e I was slightly shocked. Even though the price is relatively low for an electric car (28.490 – 31.090 euro) inside you get a feeling of a car worth roughly 10 thousand euros. The first thing that strikes your eyes is a small, only 7“display of information system. An electric car would deserve something more.

Furthermore, it is not placed ideally and in case you need to look at the navigation, you must look relatively low. Rotation towards driver is almost perfect. First minutes in the Corsa did not evoke any emotions in me.
Display ´s graphic, whether the main or the one behind the steering-wheel is also very simple...and I have to add that even the display ´s resolution is not one of the better ones. To be honest, these two factors left me a little startled. Even though we are still talking about the PSA group, the difference from DS3 or electric/hybrid Peugeots is visible. I hoped that Corsa would compensate for this with a fun ride at least.

Performance, engine power, driving range

Opel already has some experience with the production of electric cars or with PHEV - if you remember the Ampera (2012), it was able to drive purely on electric propulsion approximately 80 km (16kWh battery). Time has advanced, battery capacity has grown to 50kWh and new electric Corsa should be able to cover range over 300 kilometers.
According to WLTP, the Corsa ´s driving range is set to 337 kilometers. Reality is different though, and the only way I was able to reach 300 kilometers was by driving in the city and on the district roads and speed to 80 km/h. Average battery  consumption was around 13.5 kWh, which is  in conversion to usable capacity (45 kWh) should give you range of 333 kilometers. When I took the Corsa – e to highway with speed around 110 km/h, the driving range decreased to 257 kilometers with average battery consumption being 17.5 kWh. Speeds above 130 km / h would mean a range of less than 200 kilometers.

The Corsa-e offers the driver an opportunity to change the mode between Eco/Normal and Sport anytime during the drive. Honestly, try to set Sport from the first moment – otherwise you will be disappointed with the electric Corsa. Not that performance for such a small car is bad – 136 horsepower and 260Nm can move Corsa quite well, but on Normal or Eco it’s a bit boring. On the other hand, Sport mode adds the little Corsa proper fun. -  The formula for the real fun is being alone in the car + Sport mode + mood to drive = Corsa will bring smile to your face.

Opel beats his competitors with fast charging - Corsa-e can pull from charger 100 kW between 0-25% of battery capacity, then speed will drop down to 75 kW. When battery is charged to 51%, speed of charging drops further to 50 kW. What struck me little bit was a fact that once battery was at 73%, charging speed dropped to only 25 kW. Above 90% there is another drop in charging speed.

As standard, you get a 7.4 kW on-board charger and 11 kW at an additional cost. The interesting thing is that the on-board computer shows you, how many kilometers per hour you will charge the battery. This figure is more understandable for most people than, for example, 30 kW per hour.

Conclusion

Direct competition for the Corsa-e are the VW e-Gold and the Renault Zoe. Opel easily beats the e-Gold in terms of driving range – which is approximately 100 kilometers larger but slightly shorter than Zoe ´s. The Renault can go a little bit further (approximately 30km) for one charge. But overall neither of these competitors is as fun as the Corsa-e – which has got two faces. If you drive on Normal or Eco with family, you will not be that excited about this car. However, if you sit into the car alone, choose Sport mode and the Corsa-e becomes a fun go-kart. The fun factor is definitely on the Opel ´s side (compared to VW or Renault).

The price of the tested version was 31.090 euro and if it would not be possible to get state donation on this car, then I would have to say no to the Corsa-e. The interior simply does not beat the high price and the size of the trunk is also something not meant for bigger than two-member family. A stroller was kind of hard to fit in but after all it did. A bigger shopping bags had to go to behind the back seats.
