Seriál M*A*S*H 4077th je jeden z najznámejších seriálov a aj keď ubehlo už neskutočných 37 rokov! od posledného vysielania M*A*S*H, seriál má stále svojich fanúšikov po celom svete a priestor si nachádza aj u mladšej generácii ľudí. M*A*S*H sa odovzdáva doslova z pokolenia na pokolenie a tvrdenia, že miliónom ľudí po celom svete zmenil život nie sú náhodné. Len málokto nepozná doslova legendárne postavy ako Hawkeye Pierce, Radar, Max Klinger, Margaret Houlihan, Frank Burns, BJ, Trapper, Charles Emerson Winchester, Henry Blake alebo Col.Potter. Lenže M*A*S*H nie je len o týchto postavách ale aj o vedľajších ako Igor, Kelley, Rizo, Mulcahy a ostatný.
Posledná časť tohoto seriálu - Goodbye Farewall and Amen doteraz drží rekord v sledovanosti. Celosvetovo si poslednú časť pozrelo 121.6 milióna ľudí. Predbehol ho len Super Bowl. Len na porovnanie, posledná časť Game of Thrones pritiahla k TV 19.3 milióna ľudí a posledná časť Big Bang Theory zase 18 milióna ľudí.

V podcast svete existuje jeden skvelý, ktorý je dedikovaný presne tomuto seriálu - MASH Matters v ktorom môžete počuť Jeffa Maxwella, ktorý stvárnil kuchára Igora a Ryana Patricka - celoživotného fanúšika tohoto seriálu. Podcast je primárne o samotnom seriáli MASH, so skvelými detailmi od Jeffa a Ryana. Podcast, ktorý beží už druhým rokom hosťoval aj viacero hercov: Jamie Farr, Loretta Swit, Gary Burghoff, Kelley Nakahara, Mike Farell, Alan Alda ale producentov, scénaristov ako: Dan Wilcox, John Rappaport a Burt Metcalfe.

Pár týždňov dozadu sa mi dostalo šance a možnosť porozprávať sa s Jeffom a Ryanom. Nielen o podcaste ale aj seriály samotnom. Z takmer dvojhodinového rozhovoru vypadlo vyše 15 strán textu a tak tento rozhovor musím rozdeliť na 3 časti. Za seba musím povedať, že tak ako je zábavný samotný podcast, tak sú zábavný v skutočnosti Jeff s Ryanom. Pre mňa ako fanúšika MASH tak ide o splnený sen porozprávať sa s niekým, kto strávil nakrúcaním MASH toľko rokov a rozprávať sa s niekým, kto má rovnakú vášeň pre MASH ako ja (Ryan).

Jeff Maxwell

Jeffova kariéra v šoubiznise začala na strednej škole, keď spolu s kamarátom vytvorili komediálny tím Garrett & Maxwell. Ich komediálne schopnosti sa rýchlo rozvíjali a chlapci pokračovali vo vystúpeniach s takými klasickými zabávačmi, ako sú The Smothers Brothers, Redd Foxx, Flip Wilson, Kenny Loggins a Robin Williams. Po veľmi úspešných siedmich rokoch účinkovania po celom svete sa obaja vydali každý svojou cestou a Jeff sa stal vedúcim štúdia v castingovom oddelení spoločnosti 20th Century Fox. Otázka Lukáš: Môžete nám povedať trochu viac o sebe + aké je vaša prepojenie na seriál? 

Jeff: Ryan začni, potrebujú vedieť o tebe viac

Ryan: Žijem v Illinois, US, pracujem teraz v marketingu ale predtým som robil dlhé roky v rádiu kde som spoznal Jeffa. Robil som rannú show, v rovnaký čas Jeff napísal jeho knihu o varení a robil reklamnú kampaň po rádiách po celých štátoch. Súhlasil s tým, že príde aj do nášho malého rádia a tak sme sa prvý krát spoznali. To bolo tak pred 20 - 21 rokmi a odvtedy sme ostali v kontakte. Z rádia som odišiel v roku 2011, začal som pracovať v marketinu a pár rokov dozadu som kontaktoval Jeffa s tým, že mám nápad na podcast a robením podcastu o MASH - nevedel som kam táto idea zájde. Kontaktoval som Jeffa s tým, či by nechcel byť hosťom v podcaste alebo či by nechcel mať nejakú opakujúcu sa úlohu v ňom. Na moje potešenie a prekvapenie, mal záujem aj o niečo viac a vtedy sme spolu vytvorili koncept Mash Matters. Celé to je spojené s mojou kariérou v rádiu a vôbec som netušil, že budeme robiť toto a rozprávať sa o mojej najobľúbenejšej show.

Lukáš: Čo ty Jeff?

Jeff: Narodil som sa v malej chatrči v Alabame

Ryan: smeje sa 

Jeff pokračuje: Ale nie…Narodil som sa a vyrastal som v Kalifornii a ako malé dieťa som bol veľký a tučný a veľa nie tak veľkých a tučných detí si zo mňa uťahovalo a volali ma škaredými menami. Ako tučné dieťa sa buď naučíš vrátiť úder spať alebo sa snažíš ostatných rozosmiať a to je to o čo som sa snažil. Nebol som v tom dobrý niekoľko rokov takže ma bili ešte niekoľko ďalších rokov (Jeff sa smeje). Ale ostal som pri tom a nakoniec som dokázal rozosmiať ľudí a bola to sranda. Miloval som každú sekundu toho a nakoniec som aj stratil hmotnosť vďaka tomu. Zhodíte hmotnosť z utekania pred ľuďmi, ktorý vás chcú zbiť (smeje sa). 

Neskôr v škole som mal zopár priateľov a všetci sme stretávali spolu po škole a rozosmievali sme sa navzájom. Nakoniec sme sa rozhodli s jedným kamarátom, že to skúsime sami a dáme dokopy komediálne duo. Začalo to na strednej škole a keď sme z nej vyšli tak sme sa tým živili spolu 7-8 rokov, cestovali sme po štátoch, svete a robili sme to čo nás baví a bola to zábava. 

Duo sa volalo Garrett a Maxwell  a boli sme niečo ako komediálne duo Martin a Luis alebo Roan a Martin - pravdepodobne nikto nebude poznať tieto mená, ale boli to dvojice, ktoré sme sa snažili napodobniť a boli sme v tom dosť dobrý. Neskôr sme sa rozhodli po niekoľkých rokoch, že každý pôjdeme svojou cestou a ja som skončil v 20 century Fox a cez viacero ľudí sa ku mne dostala otázka, či chcem skúsiť herectvo? Ja som nechcel pretože som nebol blázon do herectva...ale nakoniec som skončil s malou časťou v MASH, udialo sa zopár udalostí a spadol som do toho, páčili sa mi, ja som sa páčil im a skončilo sa to 9 ročným vzťahom. A to je to ako som sa dostal do šoubiznisu a ako som sa spojil s MASHom, bola to skutočná radosť a stále je, pretože mi to dáva možnosť stretnúť sa s ľuďmi a mám možnosť porozprávať sa s dobrými ľuďmi ako si ty Lukáš, ktorý sú natoľko láskavý, že nás pozvú aby sme hovorili o sebe. Prečo tento projekt?

Lukáš: Mal som otázku ako dlho sa vlastne poznáte, pretože aspoň mne a teda aj viacerým ľudom, ktorý počúvajú podcast, spomenuli to isté - keď sa rozprávate vy dvaja vyzerá to tak ako keby ste sa poznali roky a roky a teraz sme sa dozvedeli, že to je viac ako 20 rokov.

Otázka Lukáš: Jeff, prečo si sa rozhodol pracovať na tomto projekte? (pozn.autora: Podcast)

Jeff: Pardon...

Ryan: Áno, prečo si vlastne súhlasil? Chcem to vedieť...

Jeff/Ryan: smejú sa

Jeff pokračuje: Ja vlastne neviem, musím to zistiť od niekoho kto mi povie. Kričí do pozadia: Hej Marty, prečo som sa rozhodol robiť na tom? (pozn.autora: Marty je vymyslená postava, použitá viackrát v podcaste)

Ryan: Ja si myslím, že ti to prikázal sudca, nebolo to tak?

Jeff: došlo k nejakému presadzovaniu práva…

Jeff: Prečo som súhlasil? Po prvé, keď som robil promo pre moju knihu stovky miliónov rokov dozadu, bol som v Ryanovom rádiu - mal som za sebou viacero rádiových show - ale keď som sa dostal do Ryanovho rádia tak som si to celé užil - neviem povedať prečo presne ale cítil som priateľstvo od ľudí s ktorými som sa rozprával, bolo to fajn a len pre zaujímavosť, show sme robili o 03:00 ráno môjho času v Kalifornii (pozn.autora: Jeff nadväzoval na fakt, že interview prebehlo medzi 01:00 - 03:00 SK času).

Ako som hovoril, celé som si to užil, užil som si konverzáciu s Ryanom a to mi stačilo na to, aby som mu povedal nech ostaneme v kontakte. Mimochodom Ryan je veľmi talentovaný chlap, talentovaný vysielateľ, herec, režisér a vie toho naozaj veľa a aby ste takúto vec robili poriadne, ako sa má, musí medzi ľuďmi nastať určitá úroveň dôvery. Ja rozhodne dôverujem Ryanovi a viem, že Ryan má problém dôverovať mne, čomu úplne rozumiem... (Jeff sa smeje)

Jeff pokračuje: ale veľmi som mu dôveroval, dá sa to povedať aj na našich konverzáciách a preto som do toho išiel. Myslel som si, že to bude sranda a ak som mal robiť podcast na základe nášho vzťahu a konverzácií, myslel som si, že to bude zábavné spraviť práve s Ryanom Patrickom a tak som mu povedal, pome do toho...samozrejme, že som mu strčil nohu do dverí a povedal som mu: Hej chcem ísť do toho s tebou na čo on pravdepodobne - imituje Ryana: oh preboha rozprával som sa s jeho ženou a ten chlap chce ísť do toho so mnou, zlato čo budem robiť? Pokračuje v imitácii: Ona pravdepodobne hovorí: Neviem zlato, nechaj nech ide do toho s tebou, nebude v tom rozdiel...

Jeff/Ryan: smejú sa

Jeff: Fakt, že obaja máme skoro rovnaký zmysel pre humor, máme radi MASH a máme ho radi z rôznych dôvodov, to bolo to, prečo som bol naklonený k myšlienke ísť do toho.

Ryan: Aj keď si nemal predstavu, čo podcast vlastne je...

Jeff: smeje sa a pokračuje: Nevedel som, čo je podcast and stále neviem čo je podcast a kde sa dá vlastne počúvať. Ale veľa ľudí vie, takže som s tým ok. Ale baví nás to, mňa to baví, máme skvelú zábavu, radi počúvame ľudí, ako s nami hovoria, posielajú nám e-maily, komentujú čo robíme, naozaj nás to baví, milujeme ľudí, ktorí nám volajú, nechávajú nám telefónne správy, hovoria o tom, čo pre nich MASH znamenal a myslím si, že je skvelé, že máme s Ryanom takúto platformu, ktorá umožňuje ľudom spojiť sa s týmto všetkým a vyjadriť sa k tomu. To je ďalší dôvod prečo mám rád to, čo robíme.

Prečo je M*A*S*H stále relevantný?

Otázka Lukáš: Ak počítam správne, MASH sa prestal vysielať pred 37 rokmi a stále je to veľká vec po celom svete, čo to pre vás oboch znamená? Jeff ty si hral v MASH, Ryan ty si fanúšik seriálu. Aké sú vaše pocity keď vidíte mladých ľudí 15-20 sledovať MASH a vidia v tom zmysel?

Jeff: Ryan ja som hovoril dlho, prečo nám nepovieš ty teraz niečo? (smeje sa)

Ryan: Je to skvelé, jedna z vecí, ktorá je skvelá na MASH je to, že jeho posolstvo je univerzálne. Je to posolstvo mieru a to je univerzálna správa. Napriek tomu, že to bol natočený v 70/80 rokoch a situovaný v 50tich a témy o ktorých hovorí sú relevantné rovnako dnes ako boli predtým a keď viďíš nových ľudí, ktorý si nájdu cestu k show je to skvelé. Keď sa pozrieš na TV série z tých čias, tak len zopár z nich má nohy, vie sa postaviť a sú relevantné aj dnes. Keď si pozrieš väčšinu seriálov z tých čias, tak nemajú silu, všetko vyzerá byť zastaralé, ale z MASH máš vo viacerých aspektoch pocit, že mohol byť natočený tento rok.

Z toho dôvodu je také osviežujúce keď viďís ľudí, ktorý nikdy nevideli šou, alebo ju pozerali keď boli malý alebo ju pozerali s rodičmi keď boli deti a nepozerali do odvtedy, teraz prichádzajú späť. Je cool to vidieť a je to zaujímavé pre niekoho ako ja, kto pozeral MASH celý život a bol fanúšikm seriálu celý život. Vždy ma zaujíma perspektíva niekoho kto to pozerá prvý krát a pozerá sa na to so sviežim pohľadom a má možnosť pozerať od epizódy 1 do poslednej. Je sranda byť na Twitter, Reddit a je sranda byť online a vidieť ľudí, ktorý šou nikdy nevideli a hovoria aký je MASH skvelý. Otázka Lukáš: OK Jeff, čo to pre teba znamená, že si bol toho súčasťou pred 37 rokmi a stále to veľa znamená pre ľudí?

Jeff: Naozaj som nevtipkoval, Ryan vyjadril veľa pocitov, ktoré mám aj ja. Je naozaj sranda keď nás ľudia kontaktujú a ako Ryan povedal, vy chlapi ste mi pripomenuli MASH a znova zrodili záujem a je to skvelá šou. Nie som si istý, či 15-20 ročný pozerajú šou ale mali by, je to skvelá šou :) Myslím si, že veľa ľudí, ktorý nám píšu sú starší ako to. Ale je veľmi obohacujúce vidieť keď niekto povie, že sme vzbudili uňho znova záujem a to je vždy skvelé. Sú tam tak nádherné témy počas celých 11 rokov, ktoré sa MASH vysielal. Rozprávali o veľmi podstatných veciach v našich životoch a robili to s veľkou dávkou humoru. Niektoré veľmi vážne témy boli zakryté humorom a niektoré "fackovacie" témy tak isto, ale základ a správy, ktoré boli pod tým a MASH rozprával vo veľa častiach boli univerzálne a boli v nich veľa cenných lekcií. Či máte 15 alebo 115, šou je zábavná vo viacerých aspektoch. Ak si chcete k tomu sadnúť a mať zábavu tak môžete, ak si chcete nájsť niečo čo vás donúti sa zamyslieť, tak vás donúti...Som očarovaný ňou, je to sakra roztomilá šou.

Otázka Lukas: Očakávali ste v nejakom bode, že sa toto môže stať, alebo boli pocity hercov skôr také, že to bude žiť 5-10 rokov a potom to zmizne z dohľadu?

Jeff: Keď som bol súčasťou šou a toto je téma, ktorá vyskočila aj v našom podcaste, bola to pre mňa práca. Bol som herec a herci sú notoricky známy tým, že chcú robotu a keď ju už majú tak si ju chcú udržať. V tomto som nebol iný ako ostatní herci a nebol som iný ako herci, ktorý boli súčasťou šou. Herci sú trocha iný, pretože ich nástroje je ich telo, hlas, tvár takže to je trochu iné, nevieš sa úplne separovať od toho, nevieš si len tak ľahnúť a zabudnúť na to. Vždy chodíš so sebou a tie nástroje sú stále s tebou ale stále to je len práca, chodíš do práce a dostávaš zaplatené a ak za 1.5 roka ta práca skončí, ratingy nie sú dobré a nedostaneš zaplatené, musíš si ísť hľadať ďalšiu prácu a nakoniec to nemusí byť taká kreatívna a nádherná práca ako bol MASH, ale stále pôjdeš po ďalšej práci.

Toto bola dlhá historka, ktorá chcela povedať to, že keď si na sete a robíš svoju prácu, robíš to na čo si bol najatý. Nie je to len preto, že tam chceš byť a že chceš dať každému to čo si si vždy myslel, to nie. Si tam preto aby si si zarobil na život a to je veľmi podstatné pre každého z nás. Takže keď si súčasťou toho momentu, to je to o čo sa snažíš.

Napriek tomu čo som povedal, začneš mať rád všetkých ľudí, stanú sa tvojou druhou rodinou, miluješ čo sa deje v novinách a na verejnosti a vieš, že si do toho zatiahnutý a miluješ tú šou, ale niekde vo vnútri hercov, je to tak, že milujú tú prácu. Napriek tomu, že milujú to všetko naokolo, kľúčom je tu práca.

It was overtaken only by the Super Bowl. By comparison, the last part of Game of Thrones attracted 19.3 million people to TV and the last part of Big Bang Theory attracted 18 million people.
 

There is one great podcast in the podcast world that is dedicated to this series - MASH Matters, in which you can hear Jeff Maxwell, who played private Igor and Ryan Patrick - a lifelong fan of this series. The podcast is primarily about the MASH series itself, with great details from Jeff and Ryan. The podcast, which has been running for the second year, has also hosted several actors: Jamie Farr, Loretta Swit, Gary Burghoff, Kelley Nakahara, Mike Farell, Alan Alda and other such as: Dan Wilcox, John Rappaport and Burt Metcalfe.

A few weeks ago, I had the chance and the opportunity to talk with Jeff and Ryan. Not only about the podcast but also about the series itself. More than 15 pages of text fell out of almost two-hour interview, so I will divide this interview into 3 parts. I have to say that just as the podcast itself is fun, so is Jeff and Ryan. For me as a MASH fan, it's a dream come true to talk to someone who has spent so many years filming MASH and to be able to share my passion for the show with someone as Ryan.

Jeff Maxwell

Jeff’s show business career began in high school when he and a pal formed a comedy team, Garrett & Maxwell. Their comedic skills developed rapidly, and the boys went on to perform with such classic entertainers as The Smothers Brothers, Redd Foxx, Flip Wilson, Kenny Loggins and Robin Williams. After a very successful seven years of performing around the world, the two went their separate ways, and Jeff became a studio executive in the casting department of 20th Century Fox. Missing an audience, however, Jeff traded his executive suits for a green uniform in what was destined to become the most watched show in television history. For nine years, Jeff played the role of Private Igor the beleaguered mess tent cook on the iconic series, M*A*S*H

Acting in many other television shows and films, including a comedy-classic, The Kentucky Fried Movie, Jeff also wrote, produced and directed numerous corporate videos, including two award-winning drug-awareness programs for the Keebler Corporation: I Believe In Me and Sisters. He created and produced two pilots for the CBS television network and is the recipient of a TV Land Award for his work on M*A*S*H.

Some years after the series ended production, Jeff returned to his M*A*S*H roots by authoring a best-selling cookbook, Secrets of the M*A*S*H Mess: The Lost Recipes of Private Igor. Filled with delicious recipes, letters to Igor’s mom, and never-before-seen photos, the book was written to tell Jeff and Igor’s side of their M*A*S*H experience – and to make the case that Private Igor was secretly a good cook.

Forever the entrepreneur, Jeff and a music executive friend, Rick Shoemaker, created Breaking In, a radio show designed to help listeners navigate the complex world of breaking into the entertainment business. Breaking In was a five-year hit on Los Angeles radio.

His production entity is also deeply involved in creating and selling motion picture and television products, including a very intriguing documentary about golf.

A golfer, avid skier, and currently a Los Angeles resident, Jeff’s goal is to eventually move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and ski until he drops over in the snow.

Ryan Patrick

Ryan Patrick spent most of his childhood recording silly voices and mindless musings into his handy-dandy tape recorder. Some things, it seems, never change.

Ryan is a writer, speaker, husband, father, former amateur magician, and a lover of cheese. Not fancy cheese. Just your run-of-the-mill cheddar. Sharp, preferably.

A veteran of the community theatre stage, Ryan has appeared in nearly 100 plays and musicals. Favorite roles/shows include: Willy Loman in Death Of A Salesman, Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, Lloyd in Noises Off!, Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof, Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple, Vice-Principal Panch in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and various quirky characters in Greater Tuna and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged).

In addition to his duties on M*A*S*H Matters, Ryan also hosts Funny Business: The 18-Minute Podcast About Marketing, Management, and Meatloaf with his best friend and business partner, Tim Miles.

When Ryan isn’t watching M*A*S*H, he’s enjoying live theatre, collecting autographs, cheering for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and passive-aggressively critiquing other people’s commercials.

Ryan resides in southern Illinois with his wife, two kids, and a dog named W*A*L*T*E*R.

Jeff: Let’s go, Because Ryan knows most of the words, I don’t know many words, so he tells most of it for us and I go along with that

Ryan: Jeff is best at making lot of noises too, he makes great noises, so there is that

Jeff: I don’t have the noise machine

Lukas: What a shame

Question Lukas: Can you tell us little bit more about yourself + what is your connection to the show?

Jeff: Go ahead Ryan, they need to know about you

Ryan: I live in Illinois, US, I work now at marketing but before that I worked in radio for many years. Radio is actually where I connected with Jeff, where I was doing morning show and at the same time Jeff wrote his cookbook and he was doing media tour and appearing on radio stations across the country. He agreed to come on our little radio station and join us, so that how we first connected. That was 20 – 21 years ago and we just stayed in touch since then. I left radio in 2011 and started working in marketing and then few year ago I reached out to Jeff and I had some thoughts about podcast about doing podcast about MASH and I didn’t know where it was gonna go. I reached out to him if he would like to be guest or some recurring role and to my delight and surprised, he was interested in doing even more and that when we together created concept of Mash matters. It’s all link back to my radio career and I have no idea we would be doing this and talking about my favorite TV show of all time.

Jeff: Oooh that sweet, I like that story

Jeff/Ryan: laughs

Lukas: You just made that up right? 

All: Laughs

Jeff: He made the whole thing up, none of its true but it is sweet story anyway

All: laughs

Lukas: What about you Jeff?

Jeff: I was born in small shack in Alabama

Ryan: laughs 

Jeff continues: No…Born and raised in California and as a small kid I was big fat kid in school and lot of other not so big fat kids used to push me over and call me bad names and as heavy sad kid you either learn how to hit back really hard or you try and make people laugh and that what I tried to do. I wasn’t very good at it for couple of years so I was beat up for couple of years (Jeff laughs)

But I kept at it and finally I was able to start make people laugh and it was really fun to do and I love every second of it and actually lost weight doing that. You lost weight running away from people that want to beat you up (laughs). So later on in school I have some friends and we all hang out together and we started make each other to laugh. Eventually I had one friend and we decided to try and make ourselves comedy team. It was born in high school and when we made it out of the school we made in profession and ended up staying together for 7-8 years travelling around the country, world doing comedy team which was really fun.

Comedy team was called Garret and Maxwell and we were sort of offshoot of the comedy team of Martin and Luis or Roan and Martin – which probably no one will know those names, but that who we tried to emulate and we were pretty good at it and later on we sort of just after number of years decided to go our own ways and I ended up at 20 century Fox and through lot of people there they sad well hey do you want to try acting? Which I didn’t wanted to do, cause I was not crazy about actors…but I ended up getting little part on MASH and through series events I just sort of felt into and I liked them and the like me and that was 9 year relationship and that’s how I went into showbiz and how I got associated with MASH and It was real joy and still it’s a joy, give me opportunity to meat lot of people, and give me opportunity to talk to nice people like you Lukas and who are kind enough to invite us on and talk about ourselves so Thank you!

Why this project?

Lukas: I had question how long you know each other because at least for me and I think couple of people on podcast mentioned the same, that when you are talking together it seems like you know each other for years and years and we found out its more than 20 years.

Question Lukas: Jeff why did you agreed to do this kind of project?

Jeff: Oh pardon me…

Ryan: Yes why did you agreed to do this? I wanna know to…

Jeff/Ryan: laughs

Jeff continues: I don’t know, I have to check that with somebody to tell me. Screaming to background: Hey Marty why did I agreed to that? (comment from author: Marty is fictional character used in podcast as well)

Ryan: I think judge ordered you to do that isn’t that?

Jeff: there was some law enforcement…

Ryan: laughs

Jeff: why did I agree? First of all when I did promotions for the book hundred millions years ago and was on Ryan’s radio show, and I done whole bunch of radio shows, and I got to Ryan’s and I just enjoyed it – I’ve couldn't tell exactly why, I just felt friendship with people I talked to, I enjoyed it and interestingly enough I did radio show about 3 in the morning my time California (comment from author: Jeff was relating this fact to the fact we did this interview between 1-3 AM Slovak time), because they did it quite early…But I enjoyed it and I enjoyed conversation that Ryan and I had enough to say hey lets keep in touch and we did. You know Ryan is very talented guy, talented broadcaster, actor, director he know lot of stuff and there is a certain amount of trust that has to happen between people, I think in order to do this kind of stuff well. I certainly trust Ryan and I know Ryan has having terribly time trusting me, which I completely understand (Ryan laughs) but I trusted him great deal and on conversations I can tell that I did and that's why I did it. Cause I thought it will be fun and if I was gonna do podcast based on our relationship and our conversation I thought it would be fun to do it with Ryan Patrick. So I said hey let’s do that, of course I stuck my foot in the door and said: Hey I wanna do it with ya which he probably: imitating Ryan: oh dzeeez talked to his wife and that guy want to do it with me, what I’m gonna do honey? And she probably (still imitating) I don’t know honey, let him do in what difference does it make…

Jeff/Ryan: laughs

Jeff: The fact that we just sort have sort same sense of humor and we enjoyed the fact MASH was produced and we enjoyed it for different reasons that why I was attracted to do it and I enjoy do it.

Ryan: Even though you had no idea what a podcast was

Jeff: laughs

I didn’t know what podcast was and I still don’t know what podcast is and where to listed to it. But lot of people do so I’m ok with it. But we do have fun I really enjoy it we have great time doing it, we love hearing people talk to us, sending us emails about it, comment what we are doing, we really enjoy it love people who call in, leave us phone messages, talking about what MASH meant to them and I think that it’s great that I and Ryan can have this forum to allow people to connect with that and be able to express that. That’s another reason why I enjoy doing that.

Why M*A*S*H still matters?

Question Lukas: If I counted it correctly MASH is of the air for 37 years now and still such a big thing around the world, what does it mean for both of you? Jeff you played on the MASH, Ryan you are fan of it. What are your feeling when you see young people of age 15-20 following MASH and see value of it

Jeff: Well Ryan I’ve been talking for a while why didn’t you tell us (laughs)

Ryan: Well I mean I think it’s great, one of the things that’s great about MASH is a that the message of MASH is universal. It is a message of a piece and it is universal message. And even though it was filmed in 70/80th and it was set in 50th and it’s just the themes are just as relevant today as they were back then and when you see new people coming into the show, i think it’s amazing you know. You look at TV series back from that era and there are only of handful of series from that era that still has legs and can stand up and still work today. Most of the shows, if you go back and you watch TV from that era, most of the shows are just not, they don’t hold up – the themes, everything is so outdated but MASH feels that could have been filmed this year in many ways.

So because of that, is so refreshing when you see people who have never seen the show before or they watched it when they were kids or their parents watched with their kids but they haven’t watched it since are now coming back to it. It’s so cool to see that and its interesting for somebody like me who watched it whole life and been fan of it whole life. I’m always interested in hearing perspective of somebody who is fresh to it, who is coming for the 1st time and viewing with fresh eyes and able to watch from episode 1 to the last episode having never seen it before. It’s fun to be on Twitter, Reddit and its fun get online and see people saying why I’ve never watched the show, the show is amazing. My parents watched it,  I never watched it and now I’m benching it and I’m loving it because of themes are so universal, those characters are universal. We all know these characters and so it’s really cool to see a new generation come to it and it’s also cool to see people who watched in past, we‘he heard this a lot Jeff, through the podcast who said: you know I saw MASH when it was on but I haven’t watched it in 25 years and because of your podcast I’ve been back and start to watch it again and I loving it again. So that makes us feel good.

Ryan: And I rumbled for about 18 minutes about and I have no idea what I said.

Jeff: yeah but that was what I was gonna say, so what I’m gonna talk about

 

All: laughs

Ryan: I’m sorry I read your line on a script I’m sorry

Jeff: Yeah You did

All: laughs

Lukas: So you need to come up now with different story

Ryan: Still laughs

Jeff: I don’t know what to do…what are we talking about

All: still laughs

Question Lukas: Ok Jeff what does it mean to you that you were part of it 37 years ago and still matters for people lot?

Jeff: I mean I was kind of not kidding, Ryan expressed a lot of the same feelings I have. It’s really fun to have people contact us, like Ryan said, you guys sort of reminded me MASH and stimulated my interest in it again and wow it was a good show. I’m not about sure about very young folks (15-20 year old) so I’m not sure they are watching MASH, but they should – it’s really good show 😊. I think lot of people that writing us are older than teenagers. But it is very rewarding to see, you guys helped me be interested in MASH again and that is always great. There are very wonderful themes all the way through those 11 years MASH was on. They’ve talked about very important things in all our lives, they did it with great deal humor. Some serious subjects were disquieted with humor and some slap stick material too, but the underpinnings and the underneath kind of messages MASH was saying, in lot of those shows was universal an certainly lot of valuable lessons in there. Whenever you are 15-year-old or 115 years old, the show is entertaining on lot of levels. If you just wanna sit back and laugh you can, if you wanna have something make you think you little bit, it will…I’m impressed with it, it is darn cute little show.

Ryan: laughs

Question Lukas: Did you at some point expected that this might even happen, or the feelings of the cast was that ok this might live for 5-10 years and then it will be off

Jeff: When I was on the show and this is kind of subject that comes up on our podcast, it was job to me. I was an actor and actors are notoriously desperate to get jobs and then keep a job if they have one. I was no different than any other actor and I was no different than any other actor on the show. So when you are actor and you have the security of necessarily of a contract and you’ve got 7 years contract and you know what your salary gonna be as long as that show keeps on the air and ratings are good, you know you gonna have job for x number of years and you gonna be payed x number of dollars. So, every actor wants that, every actor hopes to get that although it’s still a job, you can go to work and you can really love your job but its still a job. And you still kind wanna come home and hang out or do whatever you wanna do and not necessarily do your job. Actors are little bit different, because their instruments is their bodies, voices, faces and so forth so it is different, you can’t separate yourself, you can’t just lay you know the pen down and go to the other room and forget about it. You always walking around with yourself so your instruments are always there, but in reality it’s still a job, you are doing job and getting payed and if in 1.5 year that job ends and ratings aren’t good you are not gonna get payed and you’re gonna have to go out and try to get another job. You might come up with another show that’s not necessarily as creative as wonderful as show like MASH was, but you still gonna after another job.

So this is a long story to say, when you are on that set and you are doing that job, you doing your job you’ve been hired do to something. It’s not all because you just want to be there and you wanna give away to everybody that you always thought, it’s not You are there to make living and that is very important thing to all of us do make a living. So, when you are in involved in that moment that’s what you tried to do. Now having said that, you start to like all the people, they become 2nd family, you really love the press in terms what’s happening publicly and you know certainly you are involved and like the show itself, but on some level deep down inside actors, really like having that job. So as much as they really like the everything else around it, the job is the key. 

All: nod

Jeff: And that’s is the way I felt. It wasn’t until later, and I hear people say dzeez I was so emotionally connected, and I had all these emotional feeling about the characters. I didn’t grow up and when I was acting on the show or doing the show, I was not involved in that portion of it. I was involved in doing my job and going home and do whatever I did. So it wasn’t as emotional thing as it is for lot of viewers and that’s kind of difference between Ryan and I and I felt that’s kind of fun of the difference in our relationship to the MASH and it is and its true.

Jeff continues: What did I said? Did I say something, am is still talking is this thing on…
